While searching Bob’s stuff, Loki finds a book that appears to be written about the Jones. With a comprehensive lie fabricated by Dover, the situation is put to rest for the time being. Going further into madness, Keller builds a custom torture chamber where Alex is confined in a little dark space and is occasionally showered with scolding hot water. He appears as the villainous psychopath and a criminal.
Many times the films we see when we’re kicking back and watching as passive spectators are not the same films we see when we sit up, pen and pad in hand, and unfurl the cinematic message in its entirety. From the gradual intensifying of suspense to the gloomy atmosphere to the carefully constructed set pieces, ‘Prisoners’ is an engaging and unnerving film. Alex, quite weirdly also talks about escaping through a maze, which confirms with Taylor’s maze trails. Then cue up Netflix or pop in a DVD, and watch 1 movie to study it. Loki desperately tries to coax a confirmation out of Jones but is unable, and so releases him under lack of evidence. Through Keller’s response to the family crisis, the movie does not shine a favorable light on the “religious, patriotic, prepper” profile. Keller Dover thus acts as the Messianic character. While Birch himself is in a moral dilemma, his resistance to torture sheds light on Dover’s slide into moral insanity. In an attempt to save the two girls, Dover slides into quite a villainous territory. But by dehumanizing his captive in that manner, Keller stooped to the same level as the child abductors. It’s a really strong piece of analysis and echoes many of the themes and dynamics I explored in my February 2104 interview with Prisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski which you can read here.
While the ending does seem suspenseful and ambiguous, raising the question of whether Dover could escape the pit, Villeneuve weaves a rather concrete conclusion to the question.
It breaks down many aspects of the film, like the blocking, costuming, and aesthetic choices, as well as its symbolism, motifs, and patterns, offering a richer, more well-rounded understanding of not only the film itself, but of just how complex and intricate visual storytelling actually is.
